This guide uses the legacy Half-Elf and the 2014 Sorcerer with the Draconic Bloodline from the 2014 Player’s Handbook. It keeps those rules together. If your table uses the revised 2024 Sorcerer with a legacy Half-Elf, see our separate 2024 Sorcerer build; subclass timing, character creation, and class features differ.
Rules edition: 2014 Half-Elf and 2014 Sorcerer/Draconic Bloodline. This guide does not use 2024 backgrounds, species, or class progression.
Build ability scores and Half-Elf traits
Charisma is your spellcasting ability, so place it first. The 2014 Half-Elf increases Charisma by 2 and two different other abilities by 1. One legal standard-array assignment is Strength 8, Dexterity 13, Constitution 14, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 12, and Charisma 15 before species increases. Put the Half-Elf’s other increases in Dexterity and Constitution for final scores of Dexterity 14, Constitution 15, and Charisma 17. The 2014 background adds skills and story details, not ability-score increases.
Half-Elf traits add useful non-spell options: 60-foot Darkvision, Fey Ancestry’s Advantage on saves against being Charmed and protection from magical sleep, and Skill Versatility’s proficiency in two skills of your choice. Pair those skills with the Sorcerer and background proficiencies; Persuasion, Insight, Perception, or Arcana can fit different party roles. These traits do not grant Expertise or resistance to charm effects.
Draconic Bloodline features
The 2014 Sorcerer chooses Sorcerous Origin at level 1, so Draconic Bloodline begins immediately. At that level, Draconic Resilience gives you a base AC of 13 + your Dexterity modifier while you are not wearing armor, and increases your hit point maximum by 1 for each Sorcerer level. It does not change your d6 Hit Die. Choose your Draconic Ancestor for its associated damage type; the ancestor does not give you passive resistance at level 1.
At level 6, Elemental Affinity lets you add your Charisma modifier to one damage roll of a spell that deals your ancestor’s damage type. A spell such as scorching ray has separate damage rolls for its rays, so the modifier applies to one roll, not every ray. You can also spend 1 Sorcery Point when you cast a matching spell to gain resistance to that damage type for 1 hour; the resistance is not always active.
At level 14, Dragon Wings lets you manifest wings as a bonus action for a flying speed equal to your current speed; dismissing them also takes a bonus action. You cannot manifest them while wearing armor unless it accommodates the wings, and clothing may be damaged. At level 18, Draconic Presence lets you spend 5 Sorcery Points as an action to create a 60-foot aura for up to 1 minute, requiring Concentration. Each hostile creature that starts its turn in the aura makes a Wisdom save; on a failure it is Charmed or Frightened (your choice) until the aura ends. A creature that succeeds is immune to your aura for 24 hours.
Spells and Metamagic
The 2014 Sorcerer begins with four cantrips and two known 1st-level spells. Charisma sets your spell attack modifier and spell save DC. Choose a mix that fits the campaign rather than building every spell around one damage type. For example, shield offers a reaction-based defense and magic missile gives reliable force damage; add control, movement, or utility as you learn more spells. Check components and concentration before choosing a spell, especially when planning around a focus or another spell already active.
You gain two Metamagic options at level 3, a third at level 10, and a fourth at level 17. Quickened Spell costs 2 Sorcery Points to change an action spell to a bonus action; the 2014 bonus-action spell rule still limits other spells you cast that turn to one action cantrip. Twinned Spell costs points equal to a spell’s level (or 1 for a cantrip) and only works when the spell meets its single-target restrictions. Subtle Spell costs 1 point and removes verbal and somatic components; it does not remove material components. Choose options that support the spells you actually know.
Leveling and table fit
The 2014 Sorcerer gains Ability Score Improvements at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19. Raising Charisma improves your spell attacks and save DC; Constitution can help with hit points and concentration saves. Keep the 2014 class table beside your character sheet so you track spells known, spell slots, Sorcery Points, and Metamagic at the right levels.
For the character’s story, decide what their ancestry means to them and how the dragon connection first appeared. Half-Elf heritage does not dictate an outsider story, and a Draconic Sorcerer need not choose a single-element spell list. Discuss the legacy species and sourcebooks with your DM, then build a character whose spells and relationships suit the campaign.
