A Gnome Barbarian can be a clever front-line combatant without being defined by a Strength bonus or a “small but mighty” joke. The 2024 rules let any species choose the class that fits the character, because ability-score increases come from the background. Gnomish Cunning adds a useful defensive layer, while Barbarian Rage and weapon training provide the combat foundation. This guide uses the 2024 Gnome and Barbarian options.
Rules edition: This build uses the 2024 Player’s Handbook / Basic Rules for Gnome and Barbarian. The 2014 Gnome subraces and fixed Intelligence increase are legacy rules. If your group uses an older Gnome option, keep its traits separate from the current species unless your DM approves a combination.
What the 2024 Gnome offers
All Gnomes are Small, move 30 feet, have 60-foot Darkvision, and gain Gnomish Cunning: Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws. Choose Forest or Rock Gnome lineage. Forest Gnomes know Minor Illusion and always have Speak with Animals prepared; they can cast the spell without a slot a number of times equal to Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest, or use spell slots. Rock Gnomes know Mending and Prestidigitation and can create a short-lived Tiny clockwork device using the Prestidigitation feature.
The lineage magic is primarily utility. A Barbarian’s main combat plan does not depend on it, and choosing Gnome does not make a character less capable at Strength-based tasks. A lineage can shape a character’s history or offer helpful exploration options without dictating personality or profession.
Build the Barbarian with Strength and Constitution
Strength supports your Barbarian weapon attacks and many class features. Constitution helps with hit points and Unarmored Defense, while Dexterity can contribute to Armor Class and initiative. Choose a background that offers ability-score options and an Origin feat that support your preferred style. The species itself no longer grants a fixed Intelligence bonus, so you can assign scores for the Barbarian you want to play.
Small size affects Heavy weapons: a Small creature has Disadvantage on attack rolls with a weapon that has the Heavy property under the 2024 rules. If you want to avoid that drawback, choose a non-Heavy weapon that works with your Strength plan, such as a battleaxe, warhammer, spear, or handaxe, subject to its properties and your chosen tactics. A shield can support a durable one-handed build if that matches your fighting style.
Use the revised Barbarian features
The 2024 Barbarian gains Rage and Weapon Mastery at level 1. Rage improves your durability and supports Strength-based attacks, while Weapon Mastery rewards choosing weapons for their properties as well as their damage. At level 2, Reckless Attack and Danger Sense add risk-and-reward combat options. Your Barbarian subclass arrives at level 3, so use the revised class table rather than the older level-3 subclass assumption from the 2014 rules.
Choose a subclass from the books permitted at your table. Different Paths support different fantasies, from straightforward aggression to supernatural defenses or tactical control. Gnome ancestry does not prescribe a subclass. Check each feature’s action cost and duration; Rage, a Bonus Action attack, and lineage spells may all compete for the actions you want to take in a turn.
Put Gnomish Cunning to work
Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws can help against some mental or magical effects, but it is not immunity to magic. It will not stop weapon attacks, poison damage by itself, or every effect that calls for a different save. A Barbarian still benefits from choosing good positioning, using cover, and keeping allies close enough to support them.
Forest Gnome’s Speak with Animals can add information or roleplay opportunities when Beasts are present. It does not let you understand every creature automatically or force it to cooperate. Rock Gnome’s device and cantrips are useful for preparation and exploration, but they do not replace tools or class features. Ask the DM how a spell or device interacts with the specific obstacle in the scene.
Roleplay a distinct Barbarian
A Barbarian’s rage can be a trained battle focus, protective instinct, spiritual practice, or sheer refusal to give up. A Gnome Barbarian might be a retired siege engineer, traveling wrestler, caravan guard, or quiet village defender. Decide why this character entered danger and what they do when combat ends. Their size can change how they move through a world built for larger people, but it need not turn every scene into a gag.
At the table, choose a weapon mastery that serves your party and save Rage for encounters where its benefits matter. Use the Gnome’s saving-throw defense as a helpful advantage, not a reason to ignore threats. Talk with your DM about heavy equipment and space when a scene involves squeezing or carrying loads; use the exact size and equipment rules rather than assumptions about what a Small character can do.
