Gnome Rogue Build Guide (2024 Rules): Lineage, Skills & Tactics

2024 Player’s Handbook Gnome and Rogue; background-based ability scores

From the Ceramic Dice editorial team. Rules references, corrections, and our use of assisted drafting are explained in our editorial standards.

A 2024 Gnome Rogue combines the Rogue’s Dexterity-driven skills and precise attacks with Gnomish Cunning and a choice of magical lineage. The species does not give a fixed ability-score increase: choose a background that supports Dexterity, then decide whether Forest or Rock Gnome features fit your character. This guide uses the Gnome and Rogue from the 2024 Player’s Handbook.

Rules edition: 2024 Gnome species and Rogue class. It does not use the 2014 Gnome subraces, fixed ability-score increases, or older Gnome Cunning wording.

What the 2024 Gnome adds to a Rogue

Gnomish Cunning gives you Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws. This defense can help against many effects that target a Rogue’s mental saves, but it does not protect against every magical effect or replace good positioning. Rogues are proficient in Dexterity and Intelligence saves; Gnomish Cunning is most notable when an effect calls for Wisdom or Charisma.

Gnomish Lineage adds a distinct set of spells. Choose Forest Gnome for Minor Illusion and Speak with Animals, or Rock Gnome for Mending, Prestidigitation, and the ability to create small clockwork devices using Prestidigitation. The lineage’s spells use Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, chosen when you select the lineage. A Rogue does not need to maximize that ability to benefit from utility spells, but it matters if a spell calls for an attack roll or saving throw.

These features support different kinds of play. Forest Gnome offers a cantrip for distraction and a way to communicate with animals. Rock Gnome adds practical magic and a device for a small, creative task. Neither lineage changes Sneak Attack or grants expertise with tools.

Choose a background and ability scores

Under the 2024 character-creation rules, your background provides ability-score options and an Origin feat. Prioritize Dexterity because it supports your attacks, Armor Class, initiative, and many of your core skills. Constitution helps you stay in a fight. Intelligence is useful if you expect to rely on Investigation, Arcana, or an Arcane Trickster’s spellcasting; Wisdom supports Perception and common saving throws.

Pick a background for both its ability-score options and its Origin feat. Alert can support a character who wants to act early, Lucky offers a limited way to influence a D20 Test, and Skilled broadens your proficiencies. These are options to compare against your campaign and character concept, not mandatory Rogue picks.

Plan around Rogue features

At level 1, Expertise lets you double your Proficiency Bonus for two skill proficiencies, and Sneak Attack rewards a well-chosen attack. To qualify for Sneak Attack, use a Finesse or Ranged weapon and have Advantage on the attack roll, or meet the nearby-ally condition in the class feature. You can deal Sneak Attack damage once per turn, so look for a reliable opening each round rather than spending turns chasing a particular weapon.

At level 2, Cunning Action lets you Dash, Disengage, or Hide as a Bonus Action. At level 3, you choose a Rogue subclass and gain Steady Aim, which can grant Advantage on one attack if you have not moved that turn. These choices create a useful decision each round: reposition, protect yourself, hide, or stay still to improve one attack.

At level 5, Cunning Strike lets you trade some Sneak Attack dice for listed effects. That gives a Rogue another way to contribute when reducing a target’s options is more valuable than maximizing damage. Read the effect and its die cost before using it, and choose based on the encounter rather than assuming damage is always the best outcome.

Choose a subclass for the campaign

  • Thief: A flexible choice for a character focused on equipment, infiltration, and acting quickly. Its features reward paying attention to objects and the layout of a scene.
  • Arcane Trickster: Adds Wizard magic to the Rogue’s tools. Gnomish Lineage spells provide utility alongside the subclass rather than replacing its spell choices. Keep Intelligence in mind when selecting spells that use your spellcasting ability.
  • Assassin: Suits a character built around preparation, disguises, and opening encounters on favorable terms. Coordinate with the DM about how often the campaign supports those situations.
  • Soulknife: Provides psionic options for attacks and skill checks. It can fit a character whose talents are unusual without making the Gnome’s lineage the source of every ability.

Subclass names and features can differ between books. The list above refers to the 2024 Rogue options; if your table uses a legacy subclass, check its source and discuss how it works with the revised class.

Play the character, not the stereotype

A Gnome Rogue can be a careful investigator, an unassuming bodyguard, a traveling locksmith, or an entertainer who notices everything. Small size does not automatically grant a hiding place or make a character stealthier. Use the environment, your Stealth proficiency, and Cunning Action when the situation allows it. Gnomish Cunning gives a useful defense, but it does not require the character to be a scholar or inventor.

Avoid building around outdated assumptions that Gnomes cannot be effective Rogues without Dexterity bonuses. Ability scores come from your background, and a Rogue’s features provide the core of the build. Pick a lineage for the specific utility you want, then make sure your weapons, skills, and tactics work even when its spells do not solve the immediate problem.
