This page is a starting point for choosing a Barbarian rules edition and finding a focused build, tactics, or character guide. D&D has both the 2014 rules and revised 2024 rules; use one rules version consistently for a character and check with your DM before using optional material from another book.
Choose your rules edition first
The 2014 and revised 2024 Barbarian use different feature progressions and options. A guide labeled “2014” or “legacy” uses the original rules; a guide labeled “2024” uses the revised rules. Species, feats, subclasses, and class features can have different versions, so do not combine an older build with a revised feature unless your DM approves that mix.
In the 2014 class, Rage is a bonus action and supports Strength-based melee combat with added damage and resistance to common weapon damage. Barbarians also use a d12 Hit Die. Those details are useful starting points, but they do not describe every revised 2024 feature. Read the edition label before following a build’s scores, subclass advice, or feat choices.
Find a guide for your next step
- 2014 and legacy builds: Start with the legacy Goblin Barbarian build for ability scores, weapon choices, Rage, and optional subclass paths. The 2014 Tabaxi Barbarian guide covers a different species and mobility approach.
- Revised 2024 builds: Compare the 2024 Gnome Barbarian and 2024 Gem Dragonborn Barbarian. Each guide should be read with its stated species and class rules.
- Character ideas: The Red Dragonborn Barbarian campaign guide focuses on story and roleplay rather than replacing a mechanics guide.
- Planning: The Barbarian background guide helps connect proficiencies and character history to the campaign.
How to use build advice
Start with the ability score and weapon choices allowed by your selected edition. Then check the subclass’s sourcebook, feature levels, and prerequisites. A recommendation is optional advice, not a rule: choose it only if it suits the character and campaign. If a build uses a legacy species, confirm whether its fixed ability-score increases apply or whether your DM allows an optional reassignment rule.
Barbarians often spend Hit Dice during short rests to recover hit points, but Hit Dice are a limited resource shared across the adventuring day. Use the class’s printed rules for hit points and resting, and coordinate with the group about pacing. A guide’s suggested tactics cannot guarantee that a character will avoid damage or that a party will have a particular number of rests.
