A Kenku Barbarian is an unconventional but workable combination: the species supplies skill flexibility and sound imitation, while the class brings durability and forceful melee options. Older articles often describe Kenku as unable to speak and assign fixed ability bonuses. Those are not the current MotM traits. A current Kenku speaks its known languages normally, and its ability-score increases come from its background under the 2024 character-creation rules.
Rules edition: This guide uses the Kenku from Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse and the revised 2024 Barbarian. Volo’s Guide to Monsters contains a legacy Kenku version. Confirm with your DM that expanded species are allowed and keep the two versions separate.
What the Kenku contributes
The current Kenku chooses Small or Medium size, has a 30-foot walking Speed, and knows Common plus one other language agreed with the DM. Expert Duplication gives Advantage on ability checks to produce an exact copy when copying writing or craftwork made by you or another creature. Kenku Recall gives proficiency in two skills of your choice and lets you give yourself Advantage on a check using a proficient skill before the roll’s outcome, a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest. Mimicry accurately reproduces sounds you have heard; listeners can recognize the imitation with a Wisdom (Insight) check against DC 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Charisma modifier.
These features provide exploration and social options, not a combat damage bonus, flight, or a restriction on speech. The old +2 Dexterity/+1 Wisdom increases do not apply to a 2024 build. Do not assume mimicry automatically intimidates a creature or duplicates information the Kenku has never heard.
Ability scores and background
Strength is the usual priority for a Barbarian who wants to attack and use Strength-based features. Constitution supports durability, while Dexterity helps initiative and defense. Your background supplies ability-score increases in the revised rules, so choose among the background’s listed abilities rather than applying legacy Kenku bonuses. Select an Origin feat that fits your campaign and combat plan.
Kenku Recall grants two skill proficiencies, so coordinate with the Barbarian’s class skills and background. Athletics supports physical challenges; Perception, Survival, Stealth, or Insight can round out an adventurer depending on the campaign. Rage and other class features remain governed by the revised Barbarian rules. If comparing an older build, check the exact feature names, resource rules, and level progression before using its advice.
Path and combat role
The 2024 Barbarian chooses a subclass at level 3. The revised Player’s Handbook includes Path of the Berserker, Path of the Wild Heart, Path of the World Tree, and Path of the Zealot. Select one according to the mechanics and theme you want; a Kenku does not receive a special path or need to play a stealth-focused role. Other published paths may be available if your DM permits them.
Plan how the character contributes when not attacking: guard a retreat, hold a doorway, protect a fragile ally, or pursue a dangerous target. Follow the 2024 rules for Rage, weapon choices, and subclass features, especially if your table has previously used the 2014 class. A Dexterity-focused concept can be discussed with the DM, but it should not be presented as an automatic benefit from current Kenku traits.
Roleplay ideas and limits
A Kenku Barbarian could be a caravan defender, a survivor who learned to channel fear into courage, a village champion, or a pilgrim protecting a sacred route. Their speech need not be a limitation: choose when Mimicry is memorable, such as repeating a battle signal or preserving the voice of someone important. The character can still make original plans and converse normally using known languages.
Expert Duplication is useful for reproducing writing or craftwork under the feature’s exact conditions; it does not grant forgery expertise in every situation or make a magical copy. Mimicry reproduces sounds, not a creature’s identity, authority, or thoughts. Kenku Recall’s Advantage has a limited number of uses and requires proficiency in the relevant skill. When an idea goes beyond those written benefits, ask the DM whether a check or another rule applies.
