An Aasimar Cleric makes a natural support character, but the pairing is more than healing spells and glowing wings. Wisdom drives your Cleric magic, while Aasimar defenses, a once-per-rest heal, and a level-3 revelation give you tools for survival and a dramatic turn in combat. This guide uses the 2024 Aasimar from the Player’s Handbook with the 2024 Cleric. Older guides may use Protector or Fallen Aasimar as subraces; those labels are not separate mechanical subraces in the 2024 version.
Rules edition: This build assumes the 2024 Player’s Handbook for both Aasimar and Cleric. The Aasimar species is not part of the free 2024 Basic Rules, and Cleric subclasses beyond Life may require another source. If your table uses the 2014 rules or MotM Aasimar, use that version’s complete traits rather than combining features between books.
What the 2024 Aasimar brings
Aasimar have the Humanoid creature type, a choice of Small or Medium size, 30-foot Speed, Darkvision, and resistance to Necrotic and Radiant damage through Celestial Resistance. Healing Hands is a Magic action that lets you touch a creature and restore hit points by rolling a number of d4s equal to your Proficiency Bonus. You can use it once per Long Rest. It is useful emergency healing, but it competes with the Magic action you could use for a spell or other feature.
Light Bearer gives you the Light cantrip, using Charisma as its spellcasting ability. A Cleric already has cantrip options, so take Light when its illumination and flavor help your party; it does not replace a damage or utility cantrip you need. Aasimar also choose a Celestial Revelation at character level 3. As a Bonus Action, you transform for 1 minute, once per Long Rest. The three options are choices each time you use the trait, not permanent subraces.
- Heavenly Wings gives you a Fly Speed equal to your Speed for the duration.
- Inner Radiance sheds light and damages nearby creatures at the end of your turns. This can affect allies as well, so mind your spacing.
- Necrotic Shroud can frighten nearby creatures when you transform and gives your attacks and spells a once-per-turn damage boost of the matching type.
All three forms add extra damage once on each of your turns when you damage a target with an attack or spell. The bonus equals your Proficiency Bonus. Choose a form for the encounter: wings help with access and positioning, while the other forms reward close-range or offensive play.
Build around Wisdom and the Cleric’s role
Wisdom is your primary ability because it sets your Cleric spell save DC and spell attack bonus. Constitution helps you survive and maintain Concentration; Dexterity improves initiative and defense if you are not relying on heavy armor. The 2024 rules put ability-score increases in your background, not your species, so select a background that supports Wisdom rather than looking for an Aasimar ability bonus.
At level 1, choose your Divine Order. Protector grants Martial weapon proficiency and Heavy armor training, which suits a front-line Cleric if you can meet your armor’s Strength requirement and avoid its Speed penalty. Thaumaturge gives you an extra Cleric cantrip and a bonus to Arcana or Religion checks equal to your Wisdom modifier, with a minimum of +1. Neither is mandatory: pick based on how you want to contribute.
The revised Cleric gains Channel Divinity at level 2 and chooses a subclass at level 3. Life Domain is a strong healing-focused option in the 2024 rules: Disciple of Life improves healing from spells cast with spell slots, and Preserve Life spends Channel Divinity to distribute healing among nearby Bloodied creatures. Other domains support different concepts, but check which sourcebook your DM allows and follow that subclass’s 2024 compatibility guidance.
Make your actions work together
Healing Hands is a once-per-rest option, not a Bonus Action. Celestial Revelation is a Bonus Action, so activating it takes the same turn you might want to cast a Bonus Action spell. Plan the transformation before a difficult fight when you can, then use your action for a cantrip, a leveled spell, or a Cleric feature. Preserve Life and Healing Hands can both help stabilize a dangerous situation, but your allies still benefit from prevention: positioning, Bless, and control can reduce the damage the party takes.
Concentration is a limited resource. Choose one important Concentration spell for an encounter and protect it with good positioning; resistance to Necrotic and Radiant damage does not protect you from every attack or automatically maintain a spell. Use Heavenly Wings to reach a safe angle or objective, not just to hover where every enemy can target you. Inner Radiance and Necrotic Shroud favor a more exposed position, so coordinate with the front line before moving close to enemies.
Roleplay an Aasimar Cleric without a fixed mold
A celestial spark does not dictate your deity, alignment, or personality. Your character could be a traveling physician, a temple archivist, a reluctant vessel for a divine sign, or a village priest who would rather settle disputes than fight. “Protector” and “Fallen” can still describe a character’s story or appearance, but in the 2024 rules they do not replace the Aasimar species traits or lock you into a revelation. Decide what your Cleric believes, what they question, and how the party earned their trust.
