Rules scope: This build uses the 2014 Half-Elf and 2014 Sorcerer. Sorcerers know a limited number of spells; they do not prepare daily from the full Sorcerer list. Revised 2024 class and species rules are different.
Ability scores and racial traits
The legacy Half-Elf receives +2 Charisma and +1 to two other abilities. A legal 27-point-buy base is Strength 8, Dexterity 14, Constitution 13, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 12, Charisma 15. After +2 Charisma, +1 Dexterity, and +1 Constitution, the final array is 8/15/14/10/12/17. Do not add another +1 to Charisma or label an impossible starting score as standard array.
Half-Elf Skill Versatility grants two chosen skills; Sorcerer grants two more class skills and background grants additional features. Fey Ancestry helps against charm and magical sleep, not Constitution concentration saves. Your skill set can support exploration and social encounters, while your spells cover combat and problem-solving.
Divine Soul and other origins
Divine Soul expands your choices to include Cleric spells when you learn Sorcerer spells. Its level-1 Divine Magic feature gives one additional known spell based on an affinity. The Sorcerer still has a limited spells-known total and gains access to higher spell levels only as its class table allows; it cannot prepare the full Cleric list.
Draconic Bloodline provides an unarmored AC formula and an extra hit point per Sorcerer level. At level 6, Elemental Affinity adds Charisma to one matching spell damage roll; gaining resistance to that damage type costs 1 Sorcery Point and lasts 1 hour. Shadow, Clockwork, and Aberrant options each have their own feature text and should not be combined unless a separate rule allows it.
Metamagic options and costs
The 2014 Sorcerer chooses two Metamagic options at Sorcerer level 3, with additional options at levels 10 and 17. Metamagic Adept grants two options and 2 Sorcery Points. Those feat points can only be spent on Metamagic and return after a long rest.
Quickened Spell costs 2 points to change a spell with a one-action casting time into a bonus action. Under the 2014 bonus-action spell rule, if you cast a spell as a bonus action on your turn, the spell cast with your action that turn must be a cantrip with a one-action casting time. A reaction spell does not bypass this rule for the same turn. Quickened fireball plus action fire bolt is legal; Quickened fireball plus action scorching ray is not.
Twinned Spell costs Sorcery Points equal to the spell’s level (minimum 1) and only applies when the spell has the target characteristics described in the option. Twinned haste costs 3 points. Do not assume all single-target spells qualify; check whether the spell can target more than one creature at the level cast.
Spell-level progression
A 2014 Sorcerer reaches 3rd-level spells at Sorcerer level 5. Counterspell is a 3rd-level spell, so a single-class character can first learn it at level 5, not character or class level 3. If multiclassing, use the character’s Sorcerer level to determine spells known and the spell levels available to that class.
Misty step is a bonus-action spell, not a reaction. It competes for the turn’s one bonus action with Quickened Spell. If you cast it on a turn, you may still cast an action cantrip under the bonus-action spell rule, but you cannot cast an action-level spell that turn.
Choose spells for varied situations
Build around one or two concentration spells, a defense, a mobility tool, and a damage option. You can maintain only one concentration spell at a time. Shield uses your reaction and a spell slot; it does not compete with the bonus action but may be needed when an attack hits. Keep enough Sorcery Points for the options you plan to use and remember that Metamagic does not automatically create more spell slots.
Social skills from the Half-Elf and background help in conversations, but do not need to determine your character’s personality. Decide what they value and how they relate to the party. At level-up, select spells and Metamagic around campaign challenges and the other characters’ abilities.
Keep turns and resources simple
Before combat, decide which concentration spell matters most. In a later round, Quickened Spell can let you cast a one-action spell as a bonus action, but the action spell restriction still applies. You might cast Quickened hold person and use your action for fire bolt; you cannot add an action fireball that same turn. A bonus-action spell such as misty step also uses the turn’s bonus action, so it cannot be paired with Quickened Spell in the same turn.
Track Sorcery Points separately from spell slots. Font of Magic allows conversion according to its table, but creating a slot has a level cap and the slot disappears when you finish a long rest. The points and slot are resources with different uses, not a free increase in daily spell capacity. A long rest restores the Sorcerer’s normal Sorcery Point pool.
